Spectacular

Review Date: April 9, 2008
Reviewer: esanta, San Jose, CA USA
This is the absolute best digital jukebox out there, period. As an added bonus, it's flexible, scalable, multizone, wireless... and systems costing twenty times as much do not even come close the ease of use: Sonos currently has the highest Wife Acceptance Factor of any techno-gadget out there, only equaled by TiVo.

Although some amount of technical savvy is required for the initial setup, anybody can pick up the beautiful remote and immediately figure out how to use it (it's a bit like an iPod).

This bundle contains the wireless controller and its charger (but no charging cradle, more on this later), a ZP80 and a ZP100. The main difference between the two zone players is the ZP100 has a built-in amplifier so you can hook up speakers directly to it, whereas the ZP80 doesn't but it offers digital output (coax and optical) which the ZP100 lacks. Both zone players feature an analog input (you could use it for a TV or a satellite radio receiver, for instance) as well as analog line output. It's the perfect starter kit for a two-zone system; you can always add more controllers and zone players later as needed, and seamlessly integrate them into your system.

Sonos has been relentlessly adding features since its initial release: Rhapsody, Pandora, Napster, Sirius Satellite Radio (no antenna needed, you get the feed over the internet). Reliability has been exemplary.

The price may seem a little steep for a music system, but the nearest competitor (Logitech Squeezebox Duet Network Music System) is nowhere near as fully featured (no amplifier, no audio input, no Sirius) and doesn't cost much less for a two zone system. It also seems to be a lot more complicated to setup and use, but I must admit not having any first-hand experience with it.

The only blemish on the Sonos is that they sell the charging cradle separately for a ridiculous amount of money (it's just a dumb piece of plastic) when it's an indispensable part of the system. Considering the fairly high price of the system, I fail to see the rationale behind excluding it from the bundle... It must be the brainchild of some marketing moron. Other than this minor but irritating point... This is just the most enjoyable, reliable, easiest to use system out there.

This NAS box is a perfect complement to your Sonos system and will host the music files so you can turn off your computer and keep the music going: D-Link DNS-323 2-Bay Network Storage Enclosure

The infamous cradle (don't forget to order it): Sonos CC100 Charging Cradle for Sonos CR100 Controller

Edit: the Logitech Squeezebox Duet now supports Sirius.

[Edit August 2008] Sonos released new ZonePlayers, ZP90 and ZP120, part of the new BU150 bundle which replaces the BU130. Don't buy the now obsolete BU130 bundle unless you can get it at a significant discount over the BU150.
Man you gotta get one of these!

Fantastic product. Pipe music wirelessly to every room in your house and when you're finished setting that up, send the tunes out to the garage and to the hot tub. I have 6 amps and plan on adding three more, so as you can see I'm hardly objective about the system. And why? Because it just works, and works perfectly. I have access to my entire hard-disked music library via the color remote and when I'm in the mood can stream music via internet radio or via Rhapsody etc. Let me cut this short by saying if you have the cash, this is the way to go. Easy set up, flawless operation. Couldn't ask for more.
great product

I've had Sonos for two years, and have added two zones to my original two. I'll simply say that I haven't bought a piece of consumer electronics in the last 10 years that has given more enjoyment and caused less frustration than Sonos. If you're serious about multi-room audio this is the way to go.

Pros: simplicity, build quality, reliability, flexibility, Pandora
Cons: still expensive, Pandora extra cost

I have been searching for a wireless audio system for my home for years. There have been virtually no choices at the $1000 level. The Sonos founders must have noticed. I am amazed that they got everything right the first time around. I ordered the BU130 bundle plus the Sonos speakers. The setup was simple. Connected one of the two units (either one will do) to my router (using wired connection). The router recognized it immediately and I was in business.

The bundle comes with the 100 (amplifier included) and the 80 (no amplifier). The speakers turned out to be weak - would not get those again. If I had a choice, I would not get the 100 again because I don't need the amplifier. But, the package includes it and the package is cheaper than buying two 80s and a controller. You might find the four 10/100 etherports on the 100 useful (I didn't).

I connected my media system to the 80's line input and I now can pipe that sound all over the house (no wires). I just bought another bundle to add more rooms.

This system is just crazy rich. Besides the obvious flexibility of line-in from any of the units, Sonos includes 30-day trials of Pandora and Rhapsody. If you've ever tried Rhapsody, you may find it hard to go back to radio (broadcast or Internet). Unfortunately, you'll have to pay for it after the 30 day trial. Pandora is basically like satellite radio. I'm not hooked, yet. Sonos also delivers a broad selection of Internet radio genres. All of this is selected from the fantastic remote. Be sure to spend the extra $40 for the cradle.

One last comment. When I first set the system up, I was concerned that the range would be limited. I've had it all over my house, in every room and closet and upstairs far, from the server. No problem.
Spectacular way to fill home with iTunes, radio, etc.

Please know that Amazon had an amazing deal on Sonos in which it offered the BU130 bundle for $999 but also threw in a charging cradle (model CC100) and a pair of Polk Audio R150 Two-Way Bookshelf Loudspeakers at no additional cost. I bought 2 of those bundles because it was a great deal, but only bought two because we hadn't used Sonos yet. Now, I wish I had bought more. We love Sonos.

It was easy to setup the software to find my iTunes collection, which is stored on an external drive connected to a Mac mini. It found all the MP3s and lossless encoded songs. However, Sonos is not able to play the purchased iTunes songs with DRM protection. (Apple now sells some songs without DRM and some with DRM). From what I've read, nothing other than iTunes can play those songs. Some people have found work arounds, but 99% of my music was ripped into a lossless or MP3 format directly from CD, so that limitation is minor to me. People with large collections of DRM protected songs might see this as a deal breaker though.

The physical setup was very easy, too. To get things started, I connected the ZP80 from the bundle (1) to my home theater stereo and (2) to my router / computer. That allowed the software setup described above. Already, that unit could play my iTunes collection and the Internet radios via the Sonos remote control. Then, I plugged the ZP100 into a power outlet in a different room and connected some speakers to it. After telling the software package to add the ZP100 and giving it a name I had to press and hold some flashing lights for a few seconds. It took less than one minute to add the second zone. Then, I could listen to my music collection in that room, too.

I've since purchased a few extra ZP100's and have seven zones in the home. We can play the same song in all seven zones (perfectly synchronized between rooms) or we can send different songs to different rooms.

The remote control is very easy and intuitive. It operates A LOT like an iPod, but with a bigger screen and some extra buttons that come in handy. Although, after playing with some friends' iPhones, we look forward to a day when the Sonos controller is just a touch screen... Still, it's very easy to use and very powerful allowing the user to send whatever music to whatever location at the same or varying volume levels. Linking / unlinking two or more zones is easy.

Sound quality is audiophile grade and perform very well through our Dynaudio speakers.

The free music trials are an unexpected benefit. Rhapsody was great and give instant access to 2,000,000 on demand songs for less than the cost of one CD per month. Napster was much less impressive.

A few other feature are nice, too. (1) Each zone can also transmit an extra audio source to all the other zones. For example, I'll connect a turntable to one of them, then share the LP sounds throughout the entire house. (2) The ZP100's and ZP80 can be either hardwired with ethernet cable or they connect wirelessly, automatically as described above. I noticed that the ZP100 actually works as a router allowing it to share a single internet connection with several other devices you might have in that room. (3) These devices are reasonably small and can be hidden. (4) Album art is displayed on the controller, and the controller has "power scroll" is a nice way to move quickly through large music collections. Just zip down to artists starting with "X", then scroll to Xavier Rudd. (5) ZP100 has an separate subwoofer connection and automatically detects is a subwoofer cable is connected. That's an easy way to make small, less expensive speakers sound better, like the free R150's Amazon gave me.

This Amp kicks ass!!!

Review Date: February 12, 2006
Reviewer: D. C Frezza, Belle Mead, NJ United States
Bought this Amp a few months ago. Hook up is easy...If you can run wires(Cat-5 and speaker) from the Amp to the area you want sound(Zone). All the rest is easy. Another concern I had was that the 40 Watts per speaker would not be loud enough. Let me tell you this is not the case. It's not AC/DC in concert loud, but it's loud. One more thing, get the 2-gang control panels. The 2-gang panels allow you to change CD's, tracks, AM/FM stations, and any other function that the source(CD, AM/FM player)player remote can do. In other words the control panels can learn from the remote.

I have no complaints, I had this professionally installed in my home (around $1300) with 18 speakers around my home! its amazing! Every time I throw a party everyone compliments me on my whole house audio system, my parties are a hit now. I also like how I can create different moods around my home I like listening to hip-hop and my dude like latin pop so I can always play my jams in my game room and kick back while he listens to his stuff. I also plugged in a sirius radio and programed the remote to the keypad and I am absolutely satisfied!!!! love it!!! i may create a video review for this.

Solid, low-cost option for whole house audio

Review Date: April 5, 2010
Reviewer: Doug, Southern California
I thought I would provide an alternate view to the one review posted here. The primary complaint of the other reviewer is that he can't control his audio units from the remote pads. In fact, the remote pads have IR sensors which allow you to use the actual remote control for the device, point it at the keypad, and the IR command will get transmitted and repeated at the audio source. However, this requires you to have the actual device remote in the room where you're listening to music. This limitation is because the purchaser bought Kit #2, which contains 6 single-gang controls.

If you want to push a button on the keypad to generate the IR signals, you need to buy Kit #2, which contains 4 single-gang controls, and 2 dual-gang controls. The dual-gang controls have programmable keys which can be used to control audio sources directly, without having the original audio source remotes. So while you can't do it from every room, you can control the sources from 2 of the 6 if you buy Kit #1.

For some reason, Amazon is selling Kit #1 and Kit #2 for the same price. Not sure why anyone would want Kit #1, unless you don't have room for a dual-gang control.

I bought two Kit #1 setups (which lets me have audio in 12 locations) in 2006, and it works great. It's not as fancy as other systems that have iPod integration, LCD panels, etc. But for the price, it's a deal and a half. Only reason it doesn't get 5 stars is that I would've preferred a kit with 6 dual-gang controls.

Over-priced and Under capable

We spent about a year remodeling our place and researching the whole house music system so that we could have music in each room. We finally settled on the MDS-6a - it was a major decision - $1,100 is a lot of money.

When you get the system, it comes with a small (and I do mean small) manual with oversize print and oversize pictures. We are pretty tech savy - but it was no fun deciphering the manual. Going onto Channel Plus' website (the maker) was no help.

Finally, we got it hooked up...and no music. We then tried wiring it a couple of different ways - different from the manual - and now we have music. Okay, frustration over.

Okay, time to change the channel on the satellite radio. We thought the keypads could do something simple like change the channel on the satellite radio. I mean, come on, the system came with IR transmitters and cost over a grand. Nope - can't do it. The keypads WILL pass through the commands from our one satellite radio remote - but the keypads that we wired and installed in every room...well, Channel Plus tech support said that if we'd bought the system with the "2A" keypads we'd be able to control the radio....

Well, learn from our mistake. There's just not enough info presented on Amazon's website to make an intelligent decision about buying this equipment. We think that there must be a cheaper and better way to have music throughout the house - seeing as how the keypads can't even change the channel...

Product Description

The Wave radio II delivers deeper tones and crisper, more accurate audio performance than the original. The key to the improved sound is the new dual tapered waveguide technology, exclusively from Bose. Engineers re-sculpted the interior of the Wave radio II to accommodate not one, but two 26" folded waveguides. These dual waveguides amplify the low-frequency output, reproducing musical notes a full one-half octave lower than the original Wave radio. The result: Instruments like kettle drums and bass guitars have a more natural presence. With such accurate sound reproduction, you can appreciate more of the intricate nuances of many instruments, including the human voice. You may even hear details in music that you've never heard before. There's also a new equalization feature for talk radio. It automatically compensates for the artificially boosted low frequencies found in some talk radio programs so announcers sound more natural. The Wave radio II is simple to use. Instead of buttons on the unit, everything is conveniently controlled with a well-organized credit card-sized remote. And setup is easy too. The digital FM/AM tuner, amplifiers and speakers are all built into the unit. Just unpack it and plug it in to enjoy Bose quality sound. The display panel is large and bright, with big, bold text that's easier to read from across the room. It displays more information now too. Radio station, current time and alarm setting are all shown simultaneously. You can also use your Wave radio II to enjoy lifelike sound with your TV, VCR, DVD player or computer, thanks to the auxiliary input jack. Or plug your headphones into the convenient headphone jack for private listening. You can even place the Wave radio II near your TV or computer monitor because the speakers are magnetically shielded to avoid interference with the picture image. Customer Reviews For Bose Wave Radio II - Platinum White

Incredible sound from a small space, highly recommended!

Review Date: August 6, 2005
Reviewer: Stephan Anderson, Grapevine, Texas USA
I highly recommend the Bose Wave Radio II after having one for a month, here are the pros and cons:

PROS:

* Excellent sound quality and volume. Plays the full sound spectrum well - from deep bass notes to high octave soprano. Can turn the volume up to "very loud" before sound distortion is audible, so it's easy to listen to the radio from one room while working in another or while cleaning the house.

* Small space requirements. Easily fits on top of a bedside cabinet along with the bedside lamp. Remote control is right-sized too, only slightly larger than a credit card.

* Good features. The alarm clock works well and the input jack comes in handy if you want to listen to a CD or XM satellite radio through a portable external player.

* Ease of use. Very intuitive and easy-to-use design on the remote control and the radio, was able to use everything without referencing the product manual.

* Esthetics and envy. This radio looks great, people ask about it when they see it.

* Resale value. You won't find a used Bose Wave radio for cheap on eBay or the Amazon marketplace, Bose radios tend to hold their resale value well over time.

* Made in America. You may feel more patriotic after buying it.

CONS:

* Cost. Definitely more expensive than other radios, but considering the quality and resale value, it's probably a good value overall. If you have a rewards credit card, the radio might be obtained (for "free") by using accumulated credit card points -- many credit card points catalogs (i.e., Diners Club Rewards catalog) have the Wave Radio.

Overall, an excellent product and highly recommended. Keep up the good work Bose!
Amazing sound...

Review Date: May 13, 2005
Reviewer: Lightbearer, Lakewood, WA USA
First of all, I want to clarify that any reference here to "bass" is not a reference to rumbling, booming low ends of sound, but to the sound made by instruments such as bass drums, bass guitar, classic bass, etc. It's the sound, not the vibration. This system does it, and does it amazingly. It sounds like the deepest tone- from outside and from a distance, and it's from such a small unit. It's confusing to go right up to the system and notice that it isn't vibrating in the least, nor shaking the platform it is set on. Bose also created a system that lowers the octave for lower tones, and that doesn't just include bass sound, but bass percussion, so that these sounds are more easily noticeable from quieter volumes. As for clarity, well, status-quo for Bose. My mom owns the larger Wave system, and the clarity is amazing, and this system follows suit completely. To illustrate, I placed my Wave Radio on a TV stand I wasn't using and played an acoustic song- guitar and singing only, and it was as if the singer was knelt right there singing! You can hear every breath taken, from the beginning of the note sang to the end of it.
What enabled Bose to create such full, melodic bass in such a small unit was the patented waveguides. This principal is similar to a port system- bass production through the movement of air, which means there may be a lot of dead space or "standing wave." This may account for the number of people who've gone unimpressed with this system. To the untrained ear it may seem like only average sound, and it certainly can be if you're concentrating on listening to it up close only. I once owned a 540W ported system, so I knew that all I had to do with this one is shove (not literally) it into a corner, and listen to it from an adjacent vantage point, as close to the wall as possible. When this is done, the intended sound will come to life for you! Like I said, it isn't boomy, but completely melodic, and indistinct in its direction, which means it "fills the room with sound," as has been claimed.
I used to be obsessed with boomy bass being a pop listener, but I've also evolved into an audiophile, and so far, this system is all that Bose claims for it to be. One error for them, though, may be in relying on people to become educated on superior acoustics and adopt a taste for practical sound, rather than popular sound. I don't care, though. I'm smart enough to know that this system is far ahead of its time...

Excellent radio and reception in this mostly rural area. The sound is the best. The radio is pricey but well worth it.
Pricey, But Exceptional sound and performance

Review Date: January 12, 2009
Reviewer: Ace, East Coast
This is a solid performer. Great sound, great fidelity, great speakers.

My mornings are all the better because of this one mainstay -- my Bose -- no matter how rotten my morning mood may be, my Bose mellows out my morning long before I am able to mellow out myself.

I have no complaints about the reception -- it sure beats fiddling with an antenna -- or in the case of the system (NON Bose) that I have in my bedroom -- fiddling with the electric cord, or, of all things, a loong skinny wire -- to get better reception.

My Bose is a happy little self-contained unit that just keeps going and going and going......

A REAL Review of the Wave Radio

Review Date: May 21, 2010
Reviewer: S. Allen, Raleigh, NC USA
Many of these reviews (especially on the Graphite color one) are from either people that have no idea what they are talking about, or in a couple of cases are from the "I Hate Bose" fanatics that for some odd reason just can not stand the way Bose sells their product and for top dollar. This comes from the "price protection" they force on resellers, which is why this Radio is going to cost you $350 period, no matter where you go. That is where most of the "I hate Bose" manure comes from, not from the actual sound or quality of the product.

I have the older model, I bought the original Bose Wave Radio about 12 years ago.
It has the controls on top and also the small remote. I have in 12 years never had a single problem with any part of this radio.
At least not a problem that wasn't easily solvable, such as these radios are extremely sensitive to power fluctuations, if your power pops for even a split second these radios start blinking and you have to reset which is not good if you use it as an alarm clock. This small problem was solved by hooking it up our Battery Backup power supply for our PC, which BTW we have 2 of them and have everything in the room hooked to them, both PCs, TV, Bose Radio, everything in the room almost is hooked to them. Problem solved.

Several are complaining about "poor reception" yet none of them have their radios hooked up to a good External FM Antenna, WELL DUH!.
There is not a single radio or tuner on the market that gives really good radio reception without a very good External FM Antenna, none, nil, nada, ZIP.
Bose using the power cord as the antenna is about as good as it gets if used properly but is no where even close to as good as a nice FM antenna and is not supposed to be which is why they have a very good FM Antenna Connector on the back and why they tell you to connect a good FM antenna to it on page 13 of the manual. DOH! Problem solved.

The remote works great, I have the same remote I got with it 12 years ago even has the very same battery in it which is amazing although now since I said that Iam sure the battery is going to finally die after 12 years. I just tested it with the 12 year old battery and it works at a measured 16' away.

I have an old Discman CD player hooked to mine, occasionally hook my Iphone to it, have hooked to it our 24" Samsung HDTV we have downstairs in our dining room that we watch when eating dinner. The 24" Samsung has horrible sound from it, I mean you can set the sound to like 25% and then turn it up to 50% and there is hardly any difference. With the Bose Radio hooked up to it, it sounds fantastic and also gives us a nice radio and clock right there while we are eating dinner.

As for the sound itself, will this replace your 100+ Watts per channel 7.1 surround sound $3000 sound system? Ummm NO!
It isn't supposed to, it is a Radio Alarm Clock! but as Radio Alarm Clocks go it is a damn good one and I have never heard another one from any manufacturer that sounds better, or even as good especially for its size.

Considering the use we have gotten out of ours, Alarm Clock, CD player speakers, Great simi portable speakers for Iphone, excellent speakers for our small TV that we obviously are not going to hook up to a full sound system etc. Plus the fact that after 12 years of continuous use it is just as good today as it was 12 years ago, still looks brand new, sounds brand new and if we wanted could sell it on Ebay for damn near what I paid for it 12 years ago. I dare you name another Radio Alarm Clock that you could do that with.
To me was well worth the money I spent on it many years ago.

Also one thing to think about as far as Bose sound quality.
In high end cars like most Mercedes, Porsche's, Lamborghini, Bugatti's, Ferrari's etc all have Bose speakers in them.
They pick Bose for a reason, it is because they sound damn good and play at a specific frequency response that sounds the best to "Most People".

It is true that many so called "audiophiles" do not like Bose "Systems", this is because most of these types like to "fiddle" with various frequency responses, the ability to mix and match their equipment, to play with settings, etc. You cant do that with the lower end Bose equipment.
Classical and jazz music listeners probably prefer the Bose equalization more than most because it focuses on precision on the higher end of the listening spectrum.
They make outstanding High End speakers also, their 901's are great, even audiophiles that otherwise are riding the I Hate Bose bandwagon right off the cliff pretty much shut up when they listen to properly set up 901's.

All in all this is an excellent very well made, will last a lifetime if cared for, Radio Alarm Clock.

Can you get something that sounds "almost" as good for cheaper? Yes. I have read that Cambridge Soundworks i745 sounds "almost" as good to "most" people, some even think it sounds as good and you can get them for about $100 cheaper.
I have also read many complaints about those units screwing up rather often, I NEVER hear that about Bose, sure you hear ding a lings that don't know to hook up an antenna that it gets poor reception, you hear a complaint that the new one doesn't have controls on top, it cost too much etc. BUT you virtually never hear that the Bose Wave Radio just stopped working or that they have any real mechanical problems with the unit.

That BTW is why it sells for $350 and is why Bose sells it the way they do with price protection, it is made in the USA with high cost labor, using high cost parts.
Ones like the Cambridge are made in China and you get exactly what you pay for.

Excellent accessory for Bose Wave cd player

Review Date: March 8, 2007
Reviewer: leelee, Chicago, IL
I bought this item to accessorize my Bose Wave II cd player and just love it's fascinating design. The multi-cd changer acts as the pedestal for the Wave II player. Yes, it is rather noisy when changing discs but sound quality is excellent and it does not take up extra space. Even the disgruntled reviewers need to give Bose the credit for the ultra-modern design which does not clutter up your entertainment. Thumbs up for another great Bose product!
Delightful Companion to the Bose Wave System!

Review Date: February 15, 2009
Reviewer: Just Jayne, Portland, OR United States
After reading the reviews on Amazon, some of which were not encouraging, I bought and installed this product. It is a delightful companion to my Bose wave system. It was easy to install and operate. The slim remote works easily and tucks away in a small space. The CDs do make a little noise in changing, but nothing annoying.

The CD changer fits perfectly under the wave system and looks to be part of the unit.

Thank you Bose!
Bose Wave System with 3-CD player

Reviewer: Kenneth L. Molloy, Hayward, CA
My wife loves classical music -- both instrumental and vocal. She has hundreds of CDs and this Bose Wave system is perfect.

The quality of the sound is unbelievable, and it is so nice to be able to load three CDs to play almost continuous high-quality sound. We've never heard better sound, except perhaps at a live concert.

Product Description

Listening to the Logitech Transporter Network Music Player is a pure audio music experience. Designed to please the most discriminating audiophiles and music lovers, Logitech® Transporter¿ offers sound quality that surpasses even the most exotic CD players. Experience astounding sound clarity. The AK4396 "Miracle DAC" delivers high dynamic range and low distortion. Low out-of-band noise allows the use of low-order output filters with higher cutoffs, preserving phase and reducing distortion in the audible band. Transporter¿ offers a bit-perfect path with extremely precise timing. Clock signals are handled as precision analog signals, not as ones and zeroes. Specialized crystal oscillators, careful clock management, and linear-regulated logic supplies ensure the lowest-possible jitter throughout the system. Super regulators power Transporter's DAC and output amplifiers, offering lower output impedance, faster response, and better noise rejection than standard three-terminal regulators. You hear incredibly natural sound, with a pitch-black background and a stunning level of detail.

Customer Reviews For Logitech 930-000012 Transporter Network Music Player (Silver)

Took a bit to setup, RTMD!

Review Date: November 12, 2009
Reviewer: Steve S., Fort Worth, Texas United States
Most electronic hardware is a snap to set up, why waste time reading the manuals. However the Transporter is different in that respect. The brief manual included with the unit is out of date regarding computer software names and links. I was thrown at first getting my pc server to release the data being read. Adding a few custom settings in my (C.A.)software firewall remedied that problem. The firewall settings are actually mentioned in the manual....go figure? So I cannot stress strongly enough to (RTMD!...Read The Manual Dummy!)

There is some very knowledgable info about the Transformer at wikipedia.org, the Logitech site is useful for basic system software and a few FAQ's. Do yourself a favor and write down all ip settings for future reference. The use groups at wikipedia are where you'll find the fun stuff. Start a folder on your PC and save all links to it.

Confused by what I've just written, than you'll need a trusted friend with a bit above average computer skills and a free afternoon, or be prepaired to pay someone to do your setup for you. If either of these is going to be the case than you might want to reconsider purchasing this unit. This system is not designed for the impatient.

As with most all high-end gear, source is very important (GIGO). I've noticed nuances unheard before in a number
of my chosen reference recordings, as well as previously unnoticed distortions. Audio listening being subjective makes one wonder if hearing such is due to the critical listening of the moment or the new gear. Or could it be that we desire to hear new subtleties after dropping a decent chunk of change on a new toy. Is it a combination of these things or none of them. From where I sit I'm going with the new box and a bit higher resolution included therein. It makes the fun, funner, the good, gooder and the hey! I never noticed Coltrane bumping the mic stand on that or was that a squeek from Charlie Byrd's chair. To me its akin to putting a new stylus on your favorite cartridge.

The Transformer runs on an open source platform and some of the the tweaks written by use group members are nice additions to the unit. My wife really enjoys having the local weather data available at a glance. Before you get into the tweaks have the overall system operation down pretty well. I've found it best to backup the PC settings before doing any tweaking to be able to undo easily.

The remote that comes with the Transformer does not have a display and is line of sight only. This can be annoying for general listening. After a few weeks I went ahead and bought a Squeezebox Duet system to gain a remote with display and non line of sight control. I put the Duet receiver out in my workshop. This really allows you to do some cool stuff, you can sync the music on the players or have them run independently. This also allows you to use the remote controller as a third unit via it's 1/8" headphone jack or with adapter cables to plug it into another system as well. It can also be in sync. with the other units or independent of them. The Transformer remote takes standard batteries, the Squeezebox remote
is rechargable with station include. The Squeezebox remote is also very customizable in both function and appearance. Adding the Squeezebox unit did cost more money, however the ability to program and operate the Transformer was greatly increased with this upgrade to the system.

It is also possible to program many system settings of the Transporter via your computer, your offered plenty of built in redundancy. You have your choice of using the front panel buttons, the remote control or the computer interface. It is possible to program and control music via computer, plus compatability with WinAmp. There is a Java based software emulator that some may like also. The unit auto updates it's own firmware, software seems to be updated on a regular basis too.

I'm really not going to get into the web audio streaming functions. There are limitless choices here both free and pay to play. Your dealing with low bit-rate streams in most cases, there is quite a good world wide station search function
to use. I've used the optical line in feature to do a bit of A/B testing between CD's and Lossless streams and really have heard no discernable difference in sound quality between them. There are also options that will connect you to web based music databases, Amazon.com, and also Bio and Discog search abilities plus plenty more bells and whistles to boot.

It is very hard to not go on and on about the Transporter, as mentioned it is a piece of gear that demands patience. Being somewhat past the half-century mark I may not fully utilize some of the available functions offered herein. I do however thoroughly appreciate having those choices made available. To be able to either Set It and Forget It, or to be transported into an entirely new audio adventure.

Unbelievable piece of audio gear

OK, so I've been an "audiophile" for 20 years. But I'm not a hard-core audiophile in the sense that I don't spend my freetime auditioning interconnect cables or "breaking in" solid state audio gear. There are great improvements in higher end equipment, and even interconnects, but I'm not a sucker and don't subscribe to $20 per foot speaker cable. I own a pair of Thiel CS2.3 speakers with the last of the breed, and rather venerable, Adcom GFP-750 preamp (which even today, is a fantastic silent pre-amp compared to anything under $2,000) and the Adcom GFA-5802, which also is a venerable solid-state amplifier receiving excellent reviews from high-end audiophile magazines at the time, and continues to fetch an excellent price on E-bay. I never expected that the slim devices Transporter would sound better, or even as good as, my Adcom GCD-750 CD player as a source component. I was going to be rather content with the unit if it sounded pretty good, but offered the convenience features of an audio server. When I ripped some uncompressed audio from my CDs and queued up some tunes in the transporter, I was literally amazed by the quality of sound from the Transporter. It surpassed my trusty old friend, the GCD-750, with a wider sound stage, more "air" and transparancy between the performers, warmer mid-range, cleaner highs, and more slam in the bass. And my GCD-750 is a great CD player. I wouldn't say it is night and day, but it is a significant improvement. I was skeptical of the format of a music server, so the fact that it offered BETTER music reproduction than my GCD-750 source is truely a remarkable achievement for a unit you can pick up for $1700, if you watch the sales. The feature set is also stunning and exceeded, by far, my expectations. With over 600 CDs ripped into the unit, I am now like a baby in a candy shop with every single tune in my collection not more than 5-10 seconds away. I remember carefully opening the unit as not to destroy any of the packaging expecting I might take advantage of the 30-day return policy. Well, the box and packaging is now downstairs in the basement for good. It is truly the finest audio component I've ever purchased. At $1800 it's not chump change, but if you've been thinking about a music server, or even a stand-alone DAC, you can't go wrong with the Logitech Transporter.
Excellent, but a bit pricy

Reviewer: Audiophile,
This unit works very well to send music to a quality stereo system via a high speed home wireless network. I recommend buying and using a different software like Easy CD-DA extractor to convert your cds to hard drive files into formats like FLAC or m4a or mp3. Then the transporter can be linked to your music files on the hard drive and you can play them via your computer. This unit does come with a squeeze center software that allows you to link to iTunes if you already have that set up and also it allows different playlists. It can also take downloaded higher quality 24 bit/96khz files and play them in addition to the 16 bit/44 khz cd quality files or mp3's. Be sure to back up your files as it takes a long time to build up a hard drive with good music files and you do not want to lose them. The sound of the cds when converted to FLAC files are as good as from a very high end cd player. Of course with mp3's it is a little less quality, but that is no fault of this unit. There are some other more expensive units like from Naim, etc, and compared to them this is a good value. If you want something for less, and don't need the higher quality, the regular squeeze box is worth a look.
Audiophile quality meets iPod convenience

Reviewer: David Claussen,
The Transporter isn't cheap, but its fairly priced for all it does. The server software it relies on integrates cleanly with iTunes if desired, but is perfectly capable of standing alone without iTunes. The controls and menus are logically organized, making it easy to use. I rip all my music lossless, and had been very happy with the Squeezebox3 also made by Logitech. Stepping up from the Squeezebox3 to the Transporter was like someone cleaning out my ears, and that says a fair bit as the Squeezebox is no slouch in its own right. Installing the server software and configuring the Transporter is very straightforward if you are familiar with home networking, and setting up a wireless access point. The internal DAC is quite respectable, and the Transporter's single-ended, balanced, and digital outputs will allow it to reside in your system for years to come as you upgrade the rest of your system to keep up with it. My only regret is not having bought it sooner.
Had it for over a year i still love it!

I'm a bit of an audiophile tech geek and I love this thing. It's actually easy to set up and for the geeks of us out there, the DAC sounds great, easily the best DAC in the price range. The system itself is flexible and with the more recent software updates it's removed any of the minor glitches I might have complained about. For my less audiophile/geek friends I have gotten them Logitech Booms. It's a great sounding system and is easy enough for my technologically impaired father to manage. You can use this device and the boom with or without the logitech squeezebox server software. For my dad, I just have him set up to use the boom as an internet radio. All in all a great sounding solution.

Product Description

The ZVOX 325 is the perfect choice for someone who wants to add terrific sound to a television – without the complication and expense of a 5.1 surround sound system. It delivers remarkably accurate, wide-range sound from a single compact cabinet; with only one connecting wire….and a one-page owner’s manual. The 325 was created by legendary speaker designer Winslow Burhoe (founder of EPI Loudspeakers and Burhoe Acoustics). Frankly, we are amazed at how good the 325 sounds. It is simply delightful. Female vocalists sound warm, rich and natural. Music is reproduced with true high fidelity. Live concerts sound big and airy and awesome. Movie soundtracks are delivered with startling realism - including punchy, accurate bass. Even sporting events take on a new dimension with the 325 – you’ll hear details you’ve never heard before. And all sound is reproduced with a sense of distortion-free ease. Never before has an audio system offered this combination of high performance, small size, simplicity and affordability. Just hook up its single connecting wire and you will transform your TV into a terrific home theater system...but without all the wires and boxes. "The 325 sounded great. An awesome system." - Sound & Vision magazine "Inspires sincere gadget lust...surprisingly good surround sound." - PC World "Superior to most we've tested." - CNET "Remarkable. We're amazed." - Maximum PC magazine "Great sound." - About.com

Customer Reviews For ZVOX 325 High-Performance Single-Cabinet Surround Sound System

I'm done with 5.1 systems

Review Date: October 29, 2009
Reviewer: M. Chris, New York
This is by far the best sounding, easiest to set up all in one theater system I have owned or heard, bar none. I have owned many 5.1 systems, and also two different soundbar systems (the highly rated Sony HT CT-100 being one of them), and the zvox 325 is the best bang for the buck.

Crystal Clear vocals, smooth bass, and the phase cue option is great for action movies (Wanted and Matrix Blu-ray sounded amazing, although music sounds much better with the phase cue turned almost all the way off.)

While the CT-100 worked great in my bedroom, vocals were still a problem, and the bass was way too punchy even at lower levels. Since I had just ditched and sold all my 5.1 equipment (yamaha 1000 watt receiver, boston acoustics bookshelves, and some older bose fronts) the last thing I wanted to do was run wires all over my condo, as well as have my fiance complain about space issues and how confusing it was for her to just watch tv through the internal speakers. I also did not want to drop thousands of dollars on other sound bar systems just because they had digital audio and hdmi switching capabilities.
My hdtv has 4 hdmi inputs, which is more than enough for me. I have my blu ray, wii, and hd cable all run through hdmi into the tv (except for wii, component), and the analog audio out to the zvox 325. I still do not buy the digital audio is always better bs, as this sounds 10x clearer than my ct-100, and can go twice as loud through a stereo mini jack! No, it is not true 5.1, but during movies I can hear background effects side to side, and most importantly, I can actually HEAR the dialogue. If there is one con, its the flimsy remote, but I can deal with it. I think zvox now has a customer for life, and for $299, I dare you to do better.
Excellent sound in a compact box

I have a new 42-inch TV with Clear Voice technology and a variety of audio modes which can be set to Music, Sports, etc. It is pretty good audio. But, this ZVOX 325 unit is vastly superior! Watching the Pete Seger 90th birthday tribute was a real joy with the ZVOX. Bruce Springsteen never sounded so good.

The ZVOX does a couple things that bring the music to life. As advertised it creates a virtual surround or wide-stage effect: voices or instruments seemed to be coming from 3-4 feet on either side of the box (it is adjustable). It also creates audio separation between the instruments so that each sounds clean and true. It adds a deep, full-bodied bass which I have never heard on any TV system. The vocals are so life-like it sounded like I was right in front of the stage (that was during play-back from my iPod). There have also been moments I felt like I was sitting in a movie theatre.

Operationally the remote is a must-have. I returned some Bose speakers because they did not have the remote. Hook-up is straight-forward with just power and audio RCA jacks - my wife loves the fact there are no speakers or wires running around/outside the TV cabinet. Generally I still run with some TV volume and let the ZVOX provide the depth to the sound.

As far as drawbacks, it does not have bass or treble controls. You get what your source is putting out. With an iPod you can adjust these on the iPod. However the bass and treble on my TV do not affect the non-variable audio output so that is fixed. And, of-course, when you adjust the volume on the ZVOX you won't see that familiar volume bar pop-up on your TV.

Seniors helper!

The 30-day trial period is much toooooo long. We knew within 5 minutes after installing the ZVox 35 that this was exactly what we have been searching for the past 2 or 3 years. Very reasonable price; EASY control; small footprint; FABULOUS, concert-hall quality sound! We actually discovered that not all of the anchors MUMBLE - we just thought they did, due to the poor quality speakers in our big screen TV. I am a trained musician and have lamented the quality of TV sound - NO MORE. I highly recommend this unit to anyone looking for great sound without all the messy speaker wires, extremely high cost, and additional speakers. This one works!
Zvox unit makes me smile every day - best purchase this year!

Reviewer: David Giaimo, 30022
I bought the Zvox 325 to use with my 48" television, as I was not satisfied with the sound quality of either the TV's internal speakers OR the Bose 3-2-1 system I had been using. I found that the Zvox 325, at roughly 1/3 the cost of the Bose unit, provided sound quality that blew away the Bose 3-2-1, hands down. The room is literally filled with sound with the Zvox 325. Particularly with action films, where the dynamic range of quiet scenes combined with things like explosions and vehicle crashes, can stress even the finest audio systems, I found the Zvox 325 remained solid, clear and crisp, even at high volumes, with low end bass that reverberates through the room like speakers costing much, much more. Zvox is a tremendous product and an exceptional value, and I will definitely purchase additional Zvox units for the other areas of my home, as they provide a simple-yet-elegant, unitized product that is affordable and that outperforms systems costing many times the price!
Totally Awesome!!!

Reviewer: Krista S. Schumacher,
I use my computer as an all-around multi-media device...it's my source for music and video. I needed new speakers and tried Bose computer speakers. Major disappointment as the small satellite speakers buzzed and it just didn't have the "punch" I expected from Bose. Found the ZVOX online and bought the 325 since you get a 30-day refundable trial period. Out of the box and set up in minutes. Turned it on and WOW!!!! Totally blown away that these are computer speakers. Can't recommend these enough. If you value sound from your computer, music device, TV or whatever, you will love these. They fill my whole house, which is small, but still I've never had speakers fill the whole house before. Am too afraid to push it all the way for fear of blowing the speakers so I have no idea how loud it will go, but it's plenty loud for the neighbors to hear when I'm really rockin' out, I'm sure!
